Top-ranked Lee Chong Wei from Malaysia came back to court after a two-month break for injury, with an easy win in the first round of the Hong Kong Badminton Open here on Wednesday. Lee eased past veteran Ng Wei from Hong Kong, China, with 21-9,21-12 in half and hour.
"I rested for almost two months and this is the first tournament," said Lee. "Now the injury is better. Today I felt everything was fine. The injury did not affect my movement."
"But I am just back from injury and am scared of getting injured again. So I'll just try my best to do well here," he added.
The 5th-ranked Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia and third-ranked Peter Gade of Denmark both cruised to the second round with 2-0 victories, while reigning champion Chen Jin from China retired from the competition.
Chen called off the match when he was trailing Hong Kong's Hu Yun by 20-22, 7-11. China's top men's single Lin Dan had pulled out before the tournament kicked off.
In women's single events, Chinese players trooped on with no defeat in five single matches and two double ones. Top seed Wang Lin beat Judith Meulendijks from the Netherlands with 23-21, 19-21,21-12 while Wang Yihan defeat Germany's Nicole Grether with 21-15,24-22.
In the double's events, there were few surprising defeats from the seeded pairs.
The Hong Kong Open, which is to be concluded here on Nov. 15, is the 11th out of 12 sessions of World Badminton Federation Super Series in 2009.
