17.B lucky“幸运的,侥幸的,吉利的”。 前文的have all the luck和下文的“But the real reason why most people are successful or lucky is that...” 18.A put themselves in a place“使他们自己处于有运气的地方”。成语“设身处地”可译为:put oneself in other's position。 19.C create“创造,创作,创建”。第三段的第三句“But than man created his own luck...” 20.C talk about“谈论”。下句“I'm talking about hard, honest work”有暗示。 21.D practical“实际的,实践的,实用的”;adequate“充分的,适当的,胜任的”;meaningful“有目的的,有意义的”;honest“诚实的,可靠的,直率的”。前句“I'm talking about

  dishonest or illegal ways”暗示此处应填honest。 22.A 下句中的“they themselves are not good at doing”表明这里填ask,短语ask for help表示“寻求帮助”。 23.B 习惯搭配be good at表示“擅长”。 24.A limit“局限,界限,限度”;pressure“压力”;strength“力量,优点”;ability“能力,才智”。 out limits and weaknesses对应our own special strength。 26.C realize“认识到,了解”;promise“充诺,答应”;admit“承认”;convey“运输,表达”。根据空后的“when he was wrong”(当他犯错误的时候)可推断,他勇于“承认”(admit)错误。 28.B get by“混过,凑合,勉强应付”。get over“克服,忍受,痊愈”。 29.B make the extra effort“付出额外的努力”。 30.A take“花费”;afford“买得起,承担得起”;obtain“获得,得到”;adapt“(使)适应”。句式it takes...to do something表示“做某事需要……”。 32.D approach“途径,方式,方法”;administration“管理,经营,支配”;action“行动,活动,行为”;attitude“态度,看法”。 33.D 短语in the hands of somebody/in somebody's hands表示“命运掌握在某人的手中”。 本段第二句中“when the right, important person is watching your...” 35.B 根据下句bless your life in many ways可推测本空填reward“报酬,报答,奖赏,报偿”。

Who's in control of your life? Who's pulling your strings? For the majority of us, it's other people—society, colleagues, friends, family or our religious community. We learned this way of operating when we were very young, of course. We were brainwashed. We discovered that feeling

important and feeling accepted was a nice experience and so we learned to do everything we could to make other people like us. As Oscar Wilde puts it, “Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.”

So when people tell us how wonderful we are, it makes us feel good. We long for this good feeling like a drug—we are addicted to it and seek it out wherever we can. Therefore, we are so eager for the approval(赞同) of others that we live unhappy and limited lives, failing to do the things we really want to. Just as drug addicts and alcoholics live worsened lives to keep getting their fix(一剂毒品), we worsen our own existence to get our own constant fix of approval.

But, just as with any drug, there is a price to pay. The price of the approval drug is freedom—the freedom to be ourselves. The truth is that we cannot control what other people think. People have their own agenda, and they come with their own baggage and, in the end, they're more interested in themselves than in you. Furthermore, if we try to live by the opinions of others, we will build

our life on sinking sand. Everyone has a different way of thinking, and people change their opinions all the time. The person who tries to please everyone will only end up getting exhausted and probably pleasing no one in the process.

So how can we take back control? I think there's only one way—make a conscious decision to stop caring what other people think. We should guide ourselves by means of a set of values—not values imposed from the outside by others, but innate values which come from within. If we are driven by these values and not by the changing opinions and value systems of others, we will live a more authentic, effective, purposeful and happy life. 36.What Oscar Wilde says implies that ________. A. we have thoughts similar to those of others B. most people have a variety of thoughts C. other people's thoughts are more important D. most people's thoughts are controlled by others 37.What does the author try to argue in the third paragraph? A. Changing opinions may cost us our freedom. B. We may lose ourselves to please others. C. We need to pay for what we want to get. D. The price of taking the drug is freedom. 38.It can be concluded from the passage that ________. A. it's better to do what we like B. we shouldn't care what others think C. we shouldn't change our own opinions D. it's important to accept others' opinions 39.The author tries to persuade the readers to accept his arguments mainly by ________. A. analyzing causes and effects B. providing examples and facts C. discussing questions D. making suggestions 答案与解析:A 作者分析听别人的原因和会有什么后果,故选A项。 Ⅳ. Dear Editor, I'm writing to tell you about how we students use computers in our daily lives.
