Elizabeth Taylor, the violeteyed film goddess whose sultry screen persona, stormy personal life and enduring fame and glamour made her one of the last of the classic movie stars and a template for the modern celebrity, died on Wednesday at age 79.

She died of heart attack on March 23, 2011 with all her children around her at CedarsSinai Medical Center, where she had been in hospital for about six weeks in Los Angeles.

“My Mother was an extraordinary woman who lived life to the fullest, with great passion, humor, and love,” her son, Michael Wilding, said in a statement.

“We know, quite simply, that the world is a better place for Mom having lived in it. Her legacy will never fade, her spirit will always be with us, and her love will live forever in our hearts.”

“We have just lost a Hollywood giant,” said Elton John, a longtime friend of Taylor. “More importantly, we have lost an incredible human being.”

Taylor won three Oscars, including a special one for her humanitarian work. But she was pained by ill health, failed romances and personal tragedy.

People fell in love with Elizabeth Taylor in 1944, when she starred in National Velvet—the story of Velvet Brown, a young girl who wins first place in a famous horse race. At first, the producers of the movie told Taylor that she was too small to play the part of Velvet. However, they waited for her for a few months as she exercised and trained—and added three inches to her height in four months! Her acting in National Velvet is still considered the best by a child actress.

Born in London on Feb. 27, 1932 to American parents—her father was an art dealer, her mother had once been an actress—Taylor moved to California with her family for business reasons when she was seven and was quickly spotted by a talent scout. After her success as a child star, Taylor had no trouble moving into adult roles and won twice for Best Actress: Butterfield 8(1960) and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966)

Taylor’s fame and popularity gave her a lot of power with the movie industry, so she was able to demand very high pay for her movies. In 1963, she received $1 million for her part in Cleopatra—the highest pay received by any star up to that time.

Elizabeth Taylor is a legend of our time. Like Velvet Brown in National Velvet, she has been lucky: she has beauty, fame and wealth. But she is also a hard worker. In a career of more than 70 years and more than 50 films, she was titled as the best actress in the USA. In addition, she puts much time and efforts into her businesses, and into helping others—about 30 years ago, she founded an organization that has raised more than $40 million for research and education.

36.Which of the following is true about Elizabeth?

A.She lost the chance of playing the role of Velvet because she was small in size.

B.Her husband fell in love with Elizabeth Taylor in 1944.

C.She became Best Actress at the age of 28.

D.Elizabeth did not show much interest in acting.

37.Which of the following can’t describe Elizabeth Taylor according to the passage?

  A. Successful and hardworking.

  B. Famous and beautiful.

  C.Popular and childish.

  D. Rich and kindhearted.

38.Elizabeth moved to America in ________.

  A.1912

  B.1928

  C.1931

  D.1939

39.Which of the following is the correct order of the events that happened to Elizabeth?

  a. Elizabeth Taylor died.

  b. She moved to the US with her family.

  c. She starred in National Velvet.

  d. She succeeded in moving into adult roles.

  A.a-c-d-b

  B. b-c-d-a

  C.a-c-b-d

  D. c-a-b-d

40.What’s the best title of this passage?

A.Elizabeth Taylor, Lifelong Star, Dies at 79

  B.Elizabeth Taylor’s Death

C.Elizabeth Taylor’s Romances and Personal Tragedy

D.Elizabeth Taylor Helped a lot of People

41.In her later life, Elizabeth Taylor devoted herself to ________.

  A. doing business and helping others

  B. turning herself into a legend

  C. collecting money for the poor

  D. going about research and education work

此处选whose与diet构成whose diet(= the children's diet)这种所属关系,whose作定语。

hear about/of听到有关……,听说;hear from收到…… 方面取得一致意见;agree to do sth.

in favour of支持;in honour of为了纪念;in face of面对;in need of需要。

nevertheless “仍然,不过”; besides “此外”;approximately “近似地,大约”。
