  (2024·福建漳州三中高三月考)

Russia’s security chief has blamed an act of terror for the Russian A321 airliner crash in Egypt last month which killed 224 people.Whatever happened, the tragedy raises sad memories of horrific airplane crashes that have cost thousands of lives in recent decades.

Some of the worst such incidents—like four crashes in frightening succession into New York’s World Trade Center, the Pentagon and rural Pennsylvania on September 11,2001;the 1988 downing of Pan Am Flight 103 in Lockerbie,Scotland;and a 1977 crash involving the apparent hijacking of a Malaysian Airlines jet that left 100 dead—involved terrorist activity. But there are many others that did not, with mechanical problems, pilot error or other reasons blamed for loss of life.Below are some examples of the latter:crashes that left at least 200 people dead in each incident.

March 27,1977:A KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Boeing 747 beginning its takeoff crashed into Pan American World Airways Boeing 747 then still on the runway at the Los Rodeos Airport at Tenerife in the Canary Islands.A total of 574 people, aboard both planes, died.

July 11,1991:The landing gear of a Nigeria Airways DC8 catches fire shortly after takeoff Jeddah,Saudi Arabia. It doesn’t make it back to the airport, crashing nosedown less than 10,000 feet short of the runway and killing all 261 people aboard.

April 26,1994:The pilot of a China Airlines’ Flight 140 alerts the control tower at Japan’s Nagoya Airport of his intention not to land and try another approach. But something goes wrong and,a short time later, the Airbus A300 crashes leading to 264 deaths—though a few passengers do survive.

September 2,1998:A Swissair jetliner that had departed New York’s Kennedy airport on its way to Geneva,Switzerland, goes down off the coast of Nova Scotia,Canada;none of the 229 people aboard Flight 111 make it.Investigators believe that the MD11 lost all electrical power immediately before the crash.

June 1,2009:Air France Flight 447 is on the way from Rio de Janiero to Paris when it and its 228 passengers and crew go missing somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean. It’s not until five days later that the first bodies are found about 600 miles off the northern coast of Brazil. Two years later,French authorities blame the crash on equipment breakdown.

1.The first paragraph is intended to

  .

A.memorizes those people aboard the Russian A321 airline

B.direct attention to some disastrous airplane crashes

C.show it is the most serious incident in history

D.analyze the cause of the disaster and blame the airline company

2.Which air crash resulted from terrorist attack?

  A.China Airlines’ Flight 140.

  B.Air France Flight 447.

  C.Pan Am Flight 103.

  D.Swissair Jetliner Flight 111.

3.Which of the following statements is NOT true?

B.There were over 264 people aboard China Airlines’ Flight 140.

C.Swissair Jetliner Flight 111 crashed during its landing.

D.It took five days to find some bodies of Air France Flight 447.

4.Which of the following might be the best title for the text?

  A.Russian Airlines Plane Crash

  B.Air Crash Investigation

  C.Deadliest Airline Crashes

  D.Mysteries of Air Crashes

  B

They already guide blind and disabled people;now dogs are to be trained to help people with dementia(痴呆) or Alzheimer’s.Alzheimer’s can make people confuse night and day or forget basic things such as washing and drinking enough water.

The dogs will be trained to respond to sound triggers(触发器) in the home that make them perform tasks. The duties will include reminding their owners to take medicine,as well as encouraging them to eat, drink and sleep regularly.

The idea was developed by design students at the Glasgow School of Art and will now be put into practice by Alzheimer’s Scotland and Dogs for the Disabled. The first dogs will be distributed to four Scottish couples, where one of the partners is in the early stages of dementia.670,000 people in Britain have dementia and one in three over 65 will develop the condition.By 2024 this is expected to rise to one million.

Joyce Gray of Alzheimer’s Scotland said, “People in the early stages of dementia are still able to live a relatively normal life, and dogs help to maintain routine.” Another advantage of using the pets as companions is that dogs can give them a sense of silent support and companionship.Ms Gray said, “The evidence is that people may forget familiar faces but not pets. It’s such a strong bond that people often remember them longest.People don’t need to communicate verbally(口头上) but they can still interact. You can have a speechless bond.”

Helen McCain, director of Dogs for the Disabled, said, “People with dementia often forget to take medicine. If a dog presents them with a bag with pills in it there’s a greater chance of them taking it.The dog would also encourage the owner to take them out for walks, ensuring they keep exercising and interacting with other people.”

  5.In Britain people with dementia

  .

A.are likely to increase in number

B.are mostly over 65 years old

C.will be trained to respond to sound triggers

D.will be able to live a relatively normal life

  .

  A.making some sound signals

  B.communicating with the patients

  C.reminding the patients by barking

  D.reacting to some sound triggers

7.What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

  A.Faces.

  B.Triggers.

  C.Pets.

  D.Companions.

8.What is mainly talked about in the passage?

Cell Phones:Hang up or Keep Talking?

Millions of people are using cell phones today. In many places it is actually considered unusual not to use one.

  9

They find that the phones are more than a means of communication—having a mobile phone shows that they are cool and connected.

The explosions around the world in mobile phone use make some health professionals worried. Some doctors are concerned that in the future many people may suffer health problems from the use of mobile phones. In England, there has been a serious debate about this issue.Mobile phone companies are worried about the negative publicity of such ideas.

  10

On the other hand, why do some medical studies show changes in the brain cells of some people who use mobile phones? Signs of change in the tissues of the brain and head can be detected with modern scanning(扫描) equipment. In one case,a traveling salesman had to retire at a young age because of serious memory loss.

  11

He would often forget the name of his own son. This man used to talk on his mobile phone for about six hours a day, every day of his working week, for a couple of years.

  12

The answer is radiation.Hightech machines can detect very small amounts of radiation from mobile phones.Mobile phone companies agree that there is some radiation, but they say the amount is too small to worry about.

As the discussion about their safety continues,it appears that it’s best to use mobile phones less often.

  13

Use your mobile phone only when you really need it.Mobile phones can be very useful and convenient, especially in emergencies. In the future, mobile phones may have a warning label that says they are bad for your health. So for now,it’s wise not to use your mobile phone too often.

A.They will possibly affect their benefits.

B.In many countries, cell phones are very popular with young people.

C.What do the doctors worry about?

D.What is it that makes mobile phones potentially harmful?

E.They say that there is no proof that mobile phones are bad for your health.

F.He couldn’t remember even simple tasks.

G.Use your regular phone if you want to talk for a long time.
