Brave Frenchman Found Halfway Around the World

(NEW YORK)A French tourist highly praised for rescuing a twoyearold girl in Manhattan said he didn’t think twice before diving into the freezing East River.

Tuesday’s Daily News said 29yearold Julien Duret from France is the man who left the spot quickly after the rescue last Saturday.

He lifted the little girl out of the water after she fell off the bank at the South Street Seaport museum. He handed the girl to her father,David Anderson, who had dived in after him.

“I didn’t think at all,”Duret told the Daily News.“It happened very fast.I reacted very fast.”

Duret,an engineer on vacation, was walking with his girlfriend along the pier(码头)when he saw something falling into the water. He thought it was a doll, but realized it was a child when he approached the river. In an instant,he took off his coat and jumped into the water.

When he reached the girl, she appeared lifeless,he said. Fortunately, when she was out of the water, she opened her eyes.

Anderson said his daughter slipped off the bank when he was adjusting his camera. An ambulance came later for her, said Duret, who was handed dry clothes from onlookers.Duret caught a taxi with his girlfriend shortly after.

The rescue happened on the day before he left for France.Duret said he didn’t realize his tale of heroism had greatly moved New York until he was leaving the city the next morning.

  “I don’t really think I’m a hero,”said Duret.“Anyone would do the same thing.”

TAIBEI—Increasing numbers of Taiwanese students are joining the island’s “China rush”, seeking education on the Chinese mainland.

According to official Chinese figures, the number of Taiwanese students admitted into college and postgraduate(研究生)programs on the mainland totaled 461 in 1996, 928 in 1997 and 839 in 1998.Although no latest official numbers were available, Netbig. Com Said this number had risen between 30 to 50 percent annually in the past two years with well over 1000 entering mainland campuses last year.

The Internet site, based in the Chinese city of Shenzhen, provides education service and information on Chinese mainland college and universities. “Many Taiwanese believe a Chinese education giving more knowledge about the people and culture on the mainland will increase their chances in the Chinese job market,” Net. Com vicepresident Ingrid Huang said.“I believe it will give me handson experience in the business field on the Chinese mainland and a better understanding of the Chinese mainland people,” said Lydia Chang, a 19yearold majoring in journalism at Shih Shin University. Chang plans to go on to get a master’s degree in business administration in Shanghai, which she says offers the best environment for such studies.

A journalism graduate student, surnamed Lin, at the National Taiwan University said he would like to study law on the Chinese mainland since “there will be better career prospects now that more Taiwanese companies are going there”. “They hope the children could build up connections which could later become useful in their business operations,” said Yang Chingyao, professor of the Chinese mainland studies. A Netbig. Com survey showed the campuses favored by Taiwan students included Beijing, Qinghua and Renmin universities in Beijing, and Jinan and Zhongshan universities in Guangzhou. The most popular studies were law, business and Chinese medicine.

At present, Chinese Taibei doesn’t recognize diplomas earned on the Chinese mainland nor help with any inquiries about studying there. But recognizing the trend, education authorities are giving a final form to a policy accepting certificates(证书)from selected universities.

  Passage 2

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan—Afghans burned tires and chanted “Death to America” after U.S troops fired Monday(April 12, 2010) on a civilian bus near Kandahar, killing four people and wounding more than a dozen. Afghanistan’s president accused NATO of breaking its commitment to safeguard civilian lives.

The attack angered Afghan officials and the public in Kandahar, the Taliban’s birthplace, and dealt a blow to U.S and NATO efforts to win popular support for a coming offensive to drive the insurgents(叛乱分子) from the biggest city in the south. NATO expressed regret for the loss of civilian lives and said it was investigating.

Nearly 200 Afghans blocked highway where the shooting occurred, burning tires, firing weapons and chanting “Death to America” and other slogans. They also called for the ouster (forcing somebody out of a position) of Afghan President Hamid Karzai, a Kandahar native who has been appealing for the people here to support the U.Sled campaign against the Taliban.

“The Americans are constantly killing our civilians and the government is not demanding an explanation,” protester Mohammad Razaq said. “We demand justice from the Karzai government and the punishment of those soldiers responsible.”

Kandahar, a city of about a half million people, is nominally under government control, but the Taliban have stepped up infiltration(浸润), staging attacks and threatening local people.

“These foreigners have their enemies, but killing Afghans is not the answer,”said Abdul Hadi, who sells homemade herbal medicine in a public market. He said international forces should publish a schedule of their patrols(巡逻) so Afghans can keep out of the way.

“Better yet, I would like to see them leave Afghanistan,” he added.

Haji Zahir, who runs a transport firm, said it was time for U.S. and other foreign forces to withdraw from the country.

“They say they want to bring security. It is all lies, lies. They kill Afghans. That is not the way to bring security,” Zahir said.

  Passage 3

(2011·南昌市高三第一次模拟)CHICAGO (Reuters) Smoking not only can wrinkle(起皱纹) the face and turn it yellow—it can do the same to the whole body, researchers reported on Monday.

The study, published in the Archives of Dermatology, shows that smoking affects the skin all over the body—even skin protected from the sun.

“We examined nonfacial skin that was protected from the sun, and found that the total number of packs of cigarettes smoked per day and the total years a person has smoked were linked with the amount of skin damage a person experienced,” Dr. Yolanda Helfrich of the University of Michigan, who led the study, said in a statement.

“In participants older than 65 years, smokers had significantly more fine wrinkling than nonsmokers. Similar findings were seen in participants aged 45 to 65 years,” Helfrich’s team added in their report.

The researchers tested 82 people, smokers and nonsmokers, taking pictures of the inner right arms. They ranged in age from 22 to 91 and half were smokers.Independent judges decided how wrinkled each person’s skin was.

When skin is exposed to sunlight, notably the face, it becomes coarse, wrinkled and discolored with a pale yellow tint, Helfrich’s team wrote.

Several previous studies have found that cigarette smoking contributes to premature(过早的)skin aging as measured by facial wrinkles, the study said, but little has been done to measure the aging of skin not exposed to light.

The report did not discuss the mechanism involved but previous research has found that cigarette smoke, among other things, causes blood vessels(血管)beneath the skin to constrict(紧缩), reducing blood supply to the skin.

Smoking can also damage the connective tissue that supports both the skin and the internal organs.

  1. The best title for this passage would be________.

  A. The danger of smoking

  B. A survey of smokers

  C. Quit smoking for health

  D. Smoking causes skin aging

  2.

How wrinkled each person’s skin doesn’t relate to________.

  A. the number of cigarettes a person smokes

  B. the kind and characteristics of skin

  C. how long a person smokes

  D. how long skin is under sunlight

解析 考查细节理解。由第三段中的the total number of cigarettes(香烟)smoked per day and the total years a person has smoked were connected with the number of skin damage(损害)可知A、C两项表述正确;由第六段可知D项正确。文中没有提到皮肤的类型和状况与皮肤老化的联系。
